Small Blue Pebble

 Individual sculptural and vessel forms

Studio Ceramics. Ceramic, sculptural and vessel forms by artist Pauline Barnden. Produced at Ventnor on the Isle of wight.

My work is mainly sculptural and vessel forms inspired by the sea, swimmers and the beach using the natural colours and rhythms of the environment. The influence of constantly changing wave patterns and beach erosion stems from my interest in geology.

By looking at sculptural forms in nature, ideas have been adapted and modified to incorporate a figurative element hinting at the vulnerability of man. Many of these pieces show the metamorphosis of the human form with its environment.

I work with stoneware and porcelain clay firing at 1260 degrees celcius in an electric kiln. I use a variety of methods of construction including thrown, coiled, slab, press moulded, slip cast and combinations of these processes. I colour the clay bodies using oxides to achieve 'rock strata' effects.

Pieces are decorated by inlaid coloured slips sprayed with underglaze and oxides. I have developed my own glazes which create unusual and often unpredictable results.

I was born and educated on the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England. After studying Sculpture and Ceramics at Bath Academy of Art and Hammersmith College, I taught Art and Ceramics at various Island schools before taking early retirement from a post as Head of a High School Art Department and concentrating on my own work. I have a home and studio overlooking the beach in Ventnor on the south coast of the Island.

The business is very much a cottage industry. My studio is a converted room at the front of the house, adjoining the conservatory which serves as a showroom for the work. The kiln is sited in the garage. I open the conservatory and studio by appointment Monday thru Saturday. Please call or email me if you would like to visit. My work is also on sale at various local art galleries. I try to maintain a stock of pieces with a wide range of prices to suit all pockets, with small shells and pebbles starting at 2.50 to larger sculptural pieces around 60+.

Due to the 'informal' nature of the business, at present I have no plans to sell my work internationally - and indeed this would be difficult due to the fragile nature of the merchandise. But I hope some of you who see this website will have the opportunity to come and see the work, and I'm always happy to receive your emails.
